My Favorite Knife | Ballardini

If one follows the accurate assessments of the common - and thoroughly likeable - Saarlander, the vantage point "La Clœf" offers the best view of the Saar Loop, probably the most famous landmark of the smallest federal state in the Federal Republic. The picturesque course of the Saar River in the midst of rocky gorges is not only a painting of nature, but has also appeared time and again in a historical context as a meeting place for major national and international political celebrities. After all, the Saarland looks back on an eventful political past, which is marked above all by French influences. Visitors to the Saarland encounter an interesting mix of savoir-vivre and Saarland delight and, above all, get their money's worth in culinary terms: coq au vin meets dibbelabbes - because the Saarlanders "esse, was annere niddemols ausschwäddse kinne." (The Saarlanders eat what others can't even pronounce.)

Guido Ballardini from St. Wendel enriches this cultural diversity with a pinch of Italian passion and a good portion of acumen. For the latter is literally carefully cultivated above all in his traditional family business Ballardini Stahlwaren & Schleifservice. The history of the grinding shop goes far back into the second half of the 19th century, when his great-grandfather emigrated from Italy to Brighton in England and opened a business with a grinding shop. At the beginning of the 20th century, the grandfather and his family returned to boot country before moving to St. Wendel in Saarland in the 1930s, where Guido Ballardini has been running the business on German soil in the third generation since 1996. In addition to sharpening knives, the focus is particularly on tailor-made advice and the sale of cutlery. The passion for knives is deeply anchored in his DNA, which is why he finally returned to his family roots in the knife industry after studying mechanical engineering and subsequently working in development for an automobile manufacturer.

Occasionally he reminisces and will never forget the moment when he was 5 years old and received his first knife from his father. At the time, his father had already established a good relationship with Boker, which has been strengthened over the years into a trusting business relationship. The service is excellent and Guido Ballardini looks forward to the refreshing visits of the Boker representative every time.

Meanwhile, the Boker Plus Exskelibur II Cocobolo also brings a fresh breeze to his range. "The folder impresses with its precise workmanship, high-quality materials, light weight and, last but not least, the beautiful wide blade." The knife by designer Mike Skellern is one of the most popular series in the Boker range because "it's unobtrusive and more than adequate for most everyday tasks." Guido Ballardini remembers a very special anecdote about the Exskelibur II: "A customer lost the knife and found it completely destroyed on a country lane after a long time. However, the blade was still in very good condition. I reconditioned the blade and it will eventually find its way into the replacement copy I bought in the meantime."

Recently, Ballardini Stahlwaren & Schleiferei has established itself as another landmark in Saarland. Because here, too, the following applies: "What the "Clœf" is to its Saarschleife (Saar Loup), the knife lover is to his Saarschleifer (Grinder at the Saar)."
