Which knives are 42a compliant?
According to German weapons law, a folding knife is 42a compliant if it can only be operated with two hands. This includes, for example, pocket knives with slipjoint mechanism and nail nick, or two hand knives with nail nick and backlock, linerlock or framelock construction. So called flipjoint knives are also 42a compliant, meaning one hand knives with a flipper whose blades do not lock but are held in position, for example, by a detent ball. Fixed blade knives with a blade length under 12 cm are also considered 42a compliant, provided they are not combat knives or daggers. Permitted knives include, for example, neck knives, fixed blades and bushcraft and survival knives. An exception applies in designated weapon free zones.

Which knives are subject to a carrying prohibition?
Under Section 42a of the German Weapons Act, all folding knives that can be operated with one hand and lock at the same time, as well as fixed blade knives with blade lengths over 12 cm, are excluded. Ownership of these knives is not prohibited, but they are subject to a carrying ban and may therefore not be carried in public in Germany without a legitimate interest. For transport purposes, one hand knives and fixed blade knives with blade lengths over 12 cm may be carried if they are secured in locked knife pouches or cannot be accessed within three hand movements.

Which knives are considered prohibited items?
In Germany, objects and knives are prohibited if their design is intended to disguise another object or if they are concealed as everyday items (for example belt buckle knives or sword canes). Certain knives are also classified as prohibited items, such as balisongs or butterfly knives, gravity knives, OTF knives, push daggers and knuckle knives. However, the ban does not apply to blunt training balisongs or, in the case of hunters and furriers, to the possession of push daggers. Handling or possessing such prohibited items is punishable under the German Weapons Act by fines or imprisonment.

Since 31 October 2024, a general ban on possession and handling of automatic knives of any kind applies in Germany. These are now classified as prohibited items, and possession is a criminal offence. According to Annex 2 of the German Weapons Act, Section 1 Number 1.4.1, possession of certain automatic knives is only permitted for persons with a legitimate interest that requires one hand operation (for example due to the absence of an arm or a missing or dysfunctional hand), or where handling is connected to professional activity (for example hunting or trade) or sport (for example sailing or mountaineering). The same applies to commercial dealers or manufacturers of such knives. Sale is therefore restricted to authorised persons only. All folding and fixed blade knives marked with this notice may be owned and additionally have an official BKA determination notice. However, they may only be carried freely in public with a legitimate interest.

Possession only with legitimate interest:
All automatic knives and assisted openers marked with this notice may only be possessed if a legitimate interest exists. A legitimate interest exists, for example, for professional or hobby related purposes, such as for emergency services, anglers, hunters, sailors, mountaineers or tradespeople. Knife dealers are also considered persons with a legitimate interest.

Please note that different laws and regulations may apply in other countries. Remember that in weapon free zones, carrying dangerous objects is prohibited.
