The Old Man Amsterdam Knives & Tools, managed by Joris and Kyle, is located in the heart of the Dutch capital, surrounded by numerous grachten (Dutch: canals) and fietspaden (Dutch: cycle paths). The company was founded in 1924 by the Eberhardt family as a forge under the name "Eberhardt Aziatische Kunst B.V." and lived mainly from the import of artistic ironware such as chandeliers from the Far East. Later, wood carvings and figures from Africa followed, of which two statues still serve as mascots of the company today. From 1970 onwards, the knife branch was established not far from the company headquarters, more precisely on the opposite side of the street. Since then, The Old Man Amsterdam Knives & Tools has been a hotspot for knife lovers from all over the world, as especially the classic flair and the wide range of products speak for "the old man".
The passion for knives was kindled by the two owners in their youth. "During a holiday in Greece, my parents gave me a simple slipjoint knife as a gift. That was the starting point for my journey into the world of knives, metallurgy and sharpening," Joris reminisces.
Kyle was just 5 years old when his parents gave him a small red keychain knife: "The knife wasn't even really practical, but I loved it because I couldn't lose it. Later, I secretly inspected my older brothers' knives and studied the opening and locking mechanisms in detail."
